Why does pool volume matter?

Every chemical treatment is dosed by volume. Chlorine, algaecide, shock, pH adjusters — they all have instructions like 'X oz per 10,000 gallons.' An incorrect volume means you're either under-treating (algae and bacteria survive) or over-treating (skin irritation, cloudy water, wasted money). Get the volume right once and every chemical calculation you do from then on will be accurate.

How do I measure my pool if it's an irregular shape?

Break it into simpler shapes and add the volumes. An L-shaped pool is two rectangles. A kidney or figure-8 is trickier — measure the longest length and widest width, multiply, then apply a shape factor of about 0.85 for kidney shapes. What's the average depth vs. the actual depth?

Most residential pools have a shallow end and a deep end with a slope between them. Average depth is simply the shallow depth plus the deep depth divided by two. If your pool has a gradual slope all the way across, this is accurate. If there's a flat shallow section, a steep drop, and a flat deep section, split the pool into sections and calculate each separately.

How accurate does my volume calculation need to be?

Within 10% is fine for most chemical treatments. Pool chemical dosing has built-in tolerance, and you'll test and adjust after adding anything anyway. Where accuracy matters more is sizing equipment — pump turnover rates, heater BTU output, and salt system chlorine production are all spec'd to gallons. For equipment sizing, try to get within 5%.

My pool has a spa attached. Do I include it?

It depends on whether the spa shares water with the pool. If they're on the same plumbing and the water circulates together, include both in your total volume. If the spa can be isolated with valves, calculate them separately. Most spas run 250 to 500 gallons for a standard 6 to 8 person unit.

Volume in gallons equals length times width times average depth times 7.5. A 16x32 foot pool with 5-foot average depth: 16 times 32 times 5 times 7.5 equals 19,200 gallons. The 7.5 multiplier converts cubic feet to gallons.

Volume in gallons equals length times width times average depth times 6.7. The 6.7 multiplier accounts for the oval shape (it's derived from pi divided by 2, times 7.5). An 18x33 foot oval at 5-foot average depth: 18 times 33 times 5 times 6.7 equals about 19,899 gallons.
