Calculate Pool Volume
Pool dimensions
Average depth: 4.75 ft
How Pool Volume Is Calculated
Pool volume formulas vary by shape. Each one converts surface area and average depth into cubic feet, then multiplies by 7.5 to convert to gallons.
Formulas by Shape
- Rectangular: Length × Width × Avg Depth × 7.5
- Oval: Length × Width × Avg Depth × 5.9
- Round: Diameter × Diameter × Avg Depth × 5.9
- Freeform: Length × Width × Avg Depth × 6.375 (0.85 shape correction)
Average depth = (shallow end depth + deep end depth) ÷ 2
Volume Reference by Pool Size
| Pool Size | Shape | Avg Depth | Approx. Gallons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12×24 ft | Rectangular | 5 ft | 10,800 gal |
| 16×32 ft | Rectangular | 5 ft | 19,200 gal |
| 20×40 ft | Rectangular | 5.5 ft | 33,000 gal |
| 18 ft diameter | Round | 4 ft | 7,646 gal |
| 24 ft diameter | Round | 4.5 ft | 15,268 gal |
| 16×32 ft | Oval | 5 ft | 15,008 gal |
Worked Examples
Example 1: Standard Rectangle
Size: 16×32 ft
Shallow end: 3.5 ft
Deep end: 6 ft
Avg depth: (3.5 + 6) ÷ 2 = 4.75 ft
16 × 32 × 4.75 × 7.5 = 18,240 gal
Example 2: Round Above-Ground
Diameter: 24 ft
Shallow end: 4 ft
Deep end: 4 ft
Avg depth: (4 + 4) ÷ 2 = 4 ft
24 × 24 × 4 × 5.9 = 13,594 gal
Example 3: Freeform with Spa
Pool: 20×38 ft freeform
Depths: 3.5 ft to 6 ft
Spa: ~400 gal, shared water
Avg depth: 4.75 ft
20 × 38 × 4.75 × 6.375 = 22,971 gal
+ spa: ~23,371 gal total
Pro Tips
Expert advice to get better results on your project.
Measure depth at three points, not one
Most pools aren't perfectly sloped. Measure the shallow end, the midpoint, and the deep end, then average all three. A single midpoint measurement often underestimates volume on pools with a flat deep section.
Write the volume on the equipment pad
Write your pool's gallon count on a piece of tape and stick it to the filter or pump housing. Every time you need to calculate a chemical dose you'll have it without measuring again.
Volume tells you the starting point, not the final dose
Always test water chemistry after adding chemicals and before adding more. Pool water has existing chemical levels that affect how much you actually need. Volume-based dosing gets you close; a test kit gets you there.
Know your turnover time
Your pump should turn over the full pool volume every 8 hours or less. Divide your pool volume by 8 to get the minimum flow rate in gallons per hour. If your pump is undersized for that number, filtration and chemical distribution will both suffer.
Temperature affects chemical demand
Hot water burns through chlorine faster. On a 90°F day your pool might need twice the chlorine it does at 75°F. Volume stays constant but your dosing frequency needs to increase in summer. Test more often, not less.
Account for evaporation when calculating salt levels
As water evaporates, salt concentration increases because the salt stays behind. After topping off with fresh water, recalculate salt needs based on how many gallons you added, not total pool volume.
Pool Supplies Worth Having
Test kits, chemicals, and equipment sized to your pool volume.
Taylor K-2006 Complete Test Kit
The test kit most pool professionals use. Measures free and total chlorine, pH, acid demand, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid. More accurate than strips.
~$75
Pentair IntelliFlo Variable Speed Pump
Variable speed pumps run at lower RPM most of the time, cutting energy use by up to 80% compared to single-speed. Sized correctly to your pool volume, it pays for itself in a few seasons.
From $699
Clorox Pool and Spa Shock Plus, 6-Pack
Di-chlor shock that dissolves fast and doesn't require pre-mixing. Dose based on your pool volume. The 6-pack covers a full season of weekly shocks for a 20,000-gallon pool.
~$32
HTH Super Algae Guard, 32 oz
Preventative algaecide for weekly maintenance dosing. More effective added before algae appears than after. Dose by pool volume — the label has a clear chart.
~$18
Poolmaster Premium Pool Measuring Tape
Fiberglass tape with a weighted end for depth measurement. The weight drops straight down instead of angling like a regular tape, so your depth readings are accurate.
~$12
Hayward W3S270T SwimClear Cartridge Filter
Filter sizing is based on pool volume and turnover rate. This 270 sq ft model handles pools up to about 30,000 gallons at standard turnover. Check the spec sheet against your volume before buying.
