How deep should mulch be?

Two to three inches is the right range for most beds. Two inches works well for annual top-dressing over existing mulch. Three inches is better for new installs and anywhere with heavy weed pressure. Beyond four inches you're doing more harm than good: roots get starved for oxygen, moisture stays trapped against stems, and you're creating a comfortable home for pests. Keep mulch a few inches away from plant crowns and tree trunks regardless of depth.

How many bags of mulch equal a cubic yard?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. A standard 2 cubic foot bag means you need 13.5 bags per yard, so round up to 14. Some bags are 1.5 cu ft (18 bags per yard) or 3 cu ft (9 bags per yard). Should I buy bagged or bulk mulch?

For anything over 3 cubic yards, bulk is almost always cheaper by 30 to 50%, and you're not hauling 40 individual bags. Under 3 yards, bagged is more practical, especially if you don't have a truck or a spot to dump a pile. Most landscaping suppliers have a minimum order for delivery, usually 3 to 5 yards.

How often should I remulch?

Most mulch breaks down and compacts within a year or two. Rather than stripping and replacing, top-dress with an inch or two each spring. Rake and fluff what's already there before adding a new layer. Shredded hardwood and wood chips last longer than straw. Dyed mulches hold their color longer but add less organic value as they break down.

For oval or kidney-shaped beds, measure the longest length and widest width, multiply them, then multiply by 0.8 to account for the curved edges. Directly and proportionally. Going from 2 to 3 inches increases your volume by 50%. Going from 2 to 4 inches doubles it. This is why the depth choice matters more than most people realize when they're loading up a cart at the garden center.
