Calculate Mulch Needed
Bed dimensions
Recommended for new installs and high-weed areas.
How the Mulch Calculator Works
Mulch is sold by volume — cubic feet for bags, cubic yards for bulk. We convert your bed area and depth into the right units automatically.
The Formula
- Total area (sq ft) = length × width for each bed
- Volume (cu ft) = total area × depth (in) ÷ 12
- Volume (cu yards) = cubic feet ÷ 27
- Bags needed = cubic feet ÷ bag size (cu ft), rounded up
Depth Guide
| Depth | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | Annual refresh over existing mulch | Top-dress only — won't add weed suppression on its own |
| 2 inches | Established beds, vegetable gardens | Good weed suppression; ideal depth for annual top-dressing |
| 3 inches | New installs, trees, shrubs | Best overall depth; maximum weed control |
| 4 inches | Pathways, high-weed slopes | Avoid near plant crowns and tree trunks |
Worked Examples
Example 1: Small Front Bed
Bed: 12 × 4 ft
Depth: 3 inches
Bag size: 2 cu ft
Area: 12 × 4 = 48 sq ft
Volume: 48 × 3 ÷ 12 = 12 cu ft
Yards: 12 ÷ 27 = 0.44 cu yd
Bags: 12 ÷ 2 = 6 bags
Example 2: Foundation Planting
Bed: 40 × 6 ft
Depth: 3 inches
Bag size: 2 cu ft
Area: 40 × 6 = 240 sq ft
Volume: 240 × 3 ÷ 12 = 60 cu ft
Yards: 60 ÷ 27 = 2.22 cu yd
Bags: 60 ÷ 2 = 30 bags
Example 3: Large Backyard Beds
Total area: ~800 sq ft (3 beds)
Depth: 3 inches
Buy: Bulk delivery
Volume: 800 × 3 ÷ 12 = 200 cu ft
Yards: 200 ÷ 27 = 7.4 cu yd
+10% for waste: ~8.2 cu yd
→ Order 8–9 yards bulk
Pro Tips
Expert advice to get better results on your project.
Keep mulch away from trunks and stems
Mulch piled against a tree trunk traps moisture against the bark and invites rot and pests. Pull it back 2 to 3 inches from the base and spread it flat. The donut shape looks intentional and actually helps the tree.
Cardboard under new beds saves a season of weeding
Lay overlapping cardboard directly on the soil before mulching a new bed. It smothers existing vegetation and breaks down over one season into organic matter. Wet it before covering so it stays in place while you spread.
Match mulch type to what you're mulching
Shredded hardwood looks clean and lasts two-plus years in ornamental beds. Pine bark nuggets stay put on slopes and don't mat down. Straw breaks down fast and is better suited to vegetable gardens where you want organic matter added quickly.
Water the bed before you mulch, not just after
Mulch is good at retaining moisture but it won't create moisture. Soak the bed thoroughly before spreading, then water lightly after to help the mulch settle. If you mulch dry soil, you're just locking the dryness in.
Pull mulch back from perennials in early spring
New growth from perennials needs to push through without obstruction. As soon as you see the first shoots, pull the mulch back a few inches from the crown. Once plants are 4 to 6 inches tall, push it back around them.
Order 10% extra on bulk deliveries
Mulch compacts and shifts during transport, and some always ends up in the truck bed or the driveway. Ordering 10% over your calculated amount is cheap insurance, especially on a first-time install where you have no reference for how far it spreads.
